Who We are

The Moving on Project Portsmouth (MOPP) is a local registered charity based in the heart of Portsmouth City. We are a group of people who come together, headed by Sarah Knight, because we know what it’s like to struggle. MOPP has always been run completely by volunteers, No one receives a wage for their work. Every single penny raised goes back into the project to enable us to help more people.

Our Trustees are all Portsmouth locals, who have a passion for helping our beautiful city thrive.

“People working together in a strong community with a shared goal, and a common purpose make the impossible, possible!”

Our team has been expanding recently to include Community Payback (unpaid work) and Engage (Highbury College) who are really changing the amount of help we’re able to offer. Because of all of them contributing so much to MOPP, we’re able to free up time to reply to emails and telephone calls quicker. We’re stringent about nothing going to waste, where possible, our team also fix furniture and upcycle.

MOPP began on 27th March 2017 and to this date has helped over 6,000 individuals/families with the numbers growing weekly.

We achieved Registered Charity status in September 2019

MOPP is a totally volunteer run project.

our first adventure into expanding the project was to take on the shop at Albert Road , we soon outgrew the shop and needed to be back serving the wards that needed our service, Although we will be forever grateful for the brilliant start in our retail journey – many thanx to Keira Lea our First Landlady for believing in us and giving us a chance.

What we do

MOPP help those who are experiencing financial difficulties to make sure they have access to good, clean, serviceable second-hand furniture and household items.

The Moving on Project Portsmouth help with a massive variety of items from a bed & bedding to a sofa, bedroom furniture, cutlery, towels, even small electrical items that come P.A.T tested by us – not including white goods .

We understand how difficult it can be in the current financial climate to replace items. The Cost-of-Living Crisis is having a huge impact on society. We work with many service providers in Portsmouth to enable tenants (private or PCC – who are in receipt of a benefit*) to uphold or enter a new tenancy without going into debt for the basic necessities for their homes. This is done by way of a referral process.

Unfortunately, we cannot accept self-referrals.

*A benefit means housing benefit or means tested benefits.

We accept donations of good quality second hand furniture and small household items to our storage units in Buckland. We also accept clothing and bric-a-brac at our shop to help us raise funds to keep going.

If we have anything that we’re not able to make use of, we offer it on to other local Charities to make use of. We try to have as little waste as possible!

The Moving on Project Portsmouth receive no financial funding at this time. We rely completely on public donations, fundraisers and our Charity shop. YOUR generosity is what keeps us going!

You can find some of the service providers we work with listed at the bottom of our website.

Welcome to the Moving on Project Portsmouth and Thankyou for joining us.

How the process works

Once we receive the Referral voucher, we will contact the client via a telephone call up to 21days. Calls are normally made over a weekend. At this point we can arrange a delivery date and process the delivery payment. Collection is also very welcomed from our storage units in Buckland.
